My decision to become a Peer Support Specialist was an easy one to make. My interest lies in the fact that I, personally, have received much help and guidance from others in this field. There is no doubt in my mind, that if not for those dedicated individuals who spent countless hours helping me to get where I am now, I would still be wandering around aimlessly, lost in a world of addiction.
I now feel I need to give back to society after taking so much for so long. I’ve grown to the point in my own recovery that I feel I can help others as I have been helped. Naturally, I can’t just go to an organization and say,” Hey, look at me. I’m sober now and I want a job!” There are certain things I need to know and understand about the ‘business’ of recovery.
In addition to business matters there are clinical as well as ethical aspects that are absolutely essential to understanding addiction well enough to become helpful to those in need of therapy.
By completing this assignment I hope to learn of opportunities to employment as well as new developments in the field that I may not be aware of.
